Pope Hildebrand’s condemnation the Sinking of the IRIS Dena (March 6, 2026)
According to published reports confirmed independently, it appears that on March 4, 2026, the USS Minnesota (SSN-783), a Virginia Class attack submarine, and the USS Charlotte (SSN-766), a Los Angeles Class attack submarine, acting in concert shortly before 5:08 A. M. Standard Sri Lankan Time, each fired one MK 48 heavy torpedo at the IRIS Dena, a Moudge Class Iranian Navy Frigate, which was returning from the International Fleet Review 2026 and MILAN exercise, in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India, as guest of the Indian Navy, for which reason it was carrying no ammunition. At the time of the attack the IRIS Dena was 76 Km off the coast of Galle, Sri Lanka. While reports attribute the sinking to one of the two ships, the actual hit was captured on the periscope camera of the USS Minnesota, resulting in some confusion about which ship sunk the IRIS Dena.
Since the war being conducted by the United States of America against the Islamic Republic of Iran does not meet the standards of a just war and since the IRIS Dena was a training vessel and unarmed the time of her sinking, and since the US Navy offered no effective assistance to rescue the crew nor gave the crew warning of attack, the Holy Father, in his capacity as the Vicar of Christ on Earth, commissioned by the Lord Jesus to enlighten the consciences of men regarding His moral law, declares that the sinking of the IRIS Dena is a war crime and most grave scandal, and, on this account, in virtue of Canons 1331, 1315 § 1, 1318 (CIC 1983), imposes upon all the Catholics involved in her sinking, if any, the sentence of excommunication.
The Holy Father further urges that these Catholics, if any, and all Catholics involved in this unjust war abstain from non-defensive actions and go to confession as soon as possible, reminding them that it is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the Living God, Whose justice is inescapable and Whose punishments are eternal.
Finally, He declares that all Catholics have just cause to declare themselves non-combatants in this conflict and/or conscientious objectors, even if in the latter case, they are currently bound by an oath as members of the armed forces of any of the belligerent powers.

Secondo rapporti pubblicati e confermati indipendentemente, sembra che il 4 Marzo 2026 l’USS Minnesota (SSN-783), un sottomarino d’attacco di classe Virginia, e l’USS Charlotte (SSN-766), un sottomarino d’attacco di classe Los Angeles, agendo di concerto poco prima delle 5:08 del mattino, ora standard dello Sri Lanka, abbiano sparato un siluro pesante MK 48 ciascuno contro l’IRIS Dena, una fregata della Marina iraniana di classe Moudge, che stava tornando dall’esercitazione International Fleet Review 2026 e MILAN, a Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India, come ospite della Marina indiana, motivo per cui non trasportava munizioni. Al momento dell’attacco, l’IRIS Dena si trovava a 76 km dalla costa di Galle, in Sri Lanka. Sebbene i rapporti attribuiscano il siluramento a una delle due navi, l’impatto effettivo è stato ripreso dalla telecamera periscopica dell’USS Minnesota, creando confusione su quale nave abbia affondato l’IRIS Dena.
Poiché la guerra condotta dagli Stati Uniti d’America contro la Repubblica Islamica dell’Iran non soddisfa gli standard di una guerra giusta e poiché l’IRIS Dena era una nave scuola e disarmata al momento del suo affondamento, e poiché la Marina degli Stati Uniti non ha offerto alcuna assistenza efficace per salvare l’equipaggio né ha dato all’equipaggio alcun avvertimento di attacco, il Santo Padre, nella sua qualità di Vicario di Cristo in Terra, incaricato dal Signore Gesù di illuminare le coscienze degli uomini riguardo alla Sua legge morale, dichiara che l’affondamento dell’IRIS Dena è un crimine di guerra e uno scandalo gravissimo e, per questo motivo, in virtù dei canoni 1331, 1315 § 1, 1318 (CIC 1983), impone a tutti i cattolici coinvolti nel suo affondamento, se presenti, la sentenza di scomunica.
Il Santo Padre esorta inoltre questi cattolici, se presenti, e tutti i cattolici coinvolti in questa guerra ingiusta ad astenersi da azioni non difensive e a confessarsi il primo possibile, ricordando loro che è terribile cadere nelle mani del Dio vivente, la cui giustizia è ineluttabile e le cui punizioni sono eterne.
Infine, dichiara che tutti i cattolici hanno giusta causa per dichiararsi non combattenti in questo conflitto e/o obiettori di coscienza, anche se, in quest’ultimo caso, sono attualmente vincolati da un giuramento in quanto membri delle forze armate di una qualsiasi delle potenze belligeranti.

Étant donné que la guerre menée par les États-Unis d’Amérique contre la République islamique d’Iran ne répond pas aux normes d’une guerre juste et puisque l’IRIS Dena était un navire d’entraînement et n’était pas armé au moment de son torpillage, et puisque la marine américaine n’a offert aucune assistance efficace pour sauver l’équipage ni donné à l’équipage un avertissement d’attaque, le Saint Père, en sa qualité de Vicaire du Christ sur Terre, chargé par le Seigneur Jésus d’éclairer les consciences hommes concernant sa loi morale, déclare que le torpillage de l’IRIS Dena est un Crime de guerre et un scandale gravissime et, pour cette raison, en vertu des Canons 1331, 1315 § 1, 1318 (CIC 1983), impose à tous les catholiques impliqués dans son torpillage, le cas échéant, la peine d’excommunication.
Le Saint-Père exhorte en outre ces Catholiques, le cas échéant, et tous les Catholiques impliqués dans cette guerre injuste à s’abstenir d’actions non défensives et à se confesser dès que possible, leur rappelant que c’est une chose terrible de tomber entre les mains du Dieu vivant, dont la Justice est inévitable et dont les punitions sont éternelles.
