Regnante Domino Iesu Christo, anno clementissimae incarnationis eius millesimo septuagesimo tertio, indictione et lua undecimo, x Kalendas Maii, feria secunda, die sepulturae domini Alexandri bonae memoriae secundi papae, ne sedes apostolica diu lugeat proprio destituta pastore, congregati in basilica Beati Petri ad Vincula, nos sanctae Romanae catholicae et apostolicae Ecclesiae cardinales, clerici, acolythi, subdiacocni, diaconi, praesbyteri, praesentibus venerabilibus episcopis et abbatibus, clericis et monachis consentientibus, plurimis turbis utriusque sexus diversique ordinis acclamatibus, eligimus nobis in pastorem et summum pontificem virum religiosum, geminae scientiae prudentia pollentem, aequitatis et iustitiae praestantissumum amatorem, in adversis fortem, in prosperis temperatum, et, iuxta Apostolic dictum, bonis moribus ornatum, pudicum, modestum, sobrium, castum, hospitalem, domum suam bene regentem, in gremio huius matris Ecclesiae a peritia satis nobiliter educatum et doctum, atque pro vitae merito in archidiaconatus honorem usque hodie sublimatum, Hildebrandum videlicet archidiaconum, quem e modo usque in sempiterum et esse et dici Gregorium papam et apostolicum volumus et approbamus.

With the Lord Jesus Christ reigning, in the One Thousand and Seventy-Third year of His most clement Incarnation, in the eleventh indiction and full moon [indictione et luna undecima], on the 10th day before the Kalends of May, on Monday [feria secunda], the day of the burial of the Lord Pope Alexander II, of good memory, lest the Apostolic See, destitute of Her own Pastor, mourn too long, as ones gathered in the Basilica of Saint Peter in Chains, We the Cardinals of the Holy Catholic and Apostolic Roman Church, the Clerics, the Acolytes, the Subdeacons, the Deacons, the Priests, with the venerable Bishops and Abbots present, clerics and monks consenting, with very many crowds of each diverse sex and order acclaiming, have elected for Us as Pastor and Supreme Pontiff a religious man, proffering the prudence of twofold knowledge, a most outstanding lover of equity and justice, strong in adversities, temperate in prosperous times, and, according to the saying of the Apostle, ornamented with good morals, reserved [pudicum], modest, sober, chaste, hospitable, ruling his own house well, brought forth and taught by a sufficiently noble expertise in the womb of this Mother Church, and raised up for the merit of life to the honor of the Archdiaconate even to this day, namely, Hildebrand, the Archdeacon, whom, from now on unto forever We will and approve to be and to be called Pope and Apostolic Gregory.

Avec le règne du Seigneur Jésus-Christ, en la mille soixante-treizième année de sa très clémente Incarnation, au onzième jour de l’indiction et de la pleine lune, le dixième jour avant les calendes de mai, le lundi, jour des funérailles du Seigneur Pape Alexandre II, de bonne mémoire, de peur que le Siège apostolique, privé de son propre Pasteur, ne pleure trop longtemps, comme ceux réunis dans la basilique Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens, nous, les cardinaux de la Sainte Église catholique et apostolique romaine, les clercs, les acolytes, les sous-diacres, les diacres, les prêtres, avec les vénérables évêques et abbés présents, clercs et moines consentants, avec une foule immense de tous sexes et ordres acclamant, avons élu pour nous comme Pasteur et Souverain Pontife un homme religieux, offrant la prudence d’une double connaissance, un amoureux éminent de l’équité et de la justice, fort dans Dans l’adversité, tempérant dans la prospérité, et, selon l’Apôtre, orné de bonnes mœurs, réservé, modeste, sobre, chaste, hospitalier, dirigeant bien sa propre maison, élevé et instruit par une expertise suffisamment noble au sein de cette Mère Église, et élevé pour le mérite de sa vie à l’honneur de l’archidiaconé jusqu’à ce jour, à savoir Hildebrand, l’archidiacre, que Nous, désormais et à jamais, voulons et approuvons comme Pape et Apostolic Grégoire.
